Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa – TRV)

A Visitor Visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), allows foreign nationals to enter and stay in Canada temporarily for tourism, family visits, or short-term business purposes.

Unless a person is from a visa-exempt country, they must obtain a visitor visa before travelling to Canada. In most cases, approved visitors are allowed to stay for up to six months per entry, unless otherwise specified by a border officer.

Visa Types

• Single-entry visa – allows one-time entry into Canada
• Multiple-entry visa – allows multiple visits during the validity period (often up to 10 years or until passport expiry)

Who Needs a Visitor Visa?

Most foreign nationals require a visitor visa unless they are:

• Citizens of visa-exempt countries (may require an eTA for air travel)
• U.S. citizens (can enter with a valid passport)
• Certain U.S. permanent residents (Green Card holders)
• Individuals eligible for specific exemptions (e.g., certain transport crew members)

Visa officers typically assess:

• Valid passport and identity documents
• Purpose of visit
• Proof of financial support
• Strong ties to home country (employment, family, assets)
• Invitation letter (if applicable)
• Proof of temporary intent to leave Canada after visit

Visitor Visa Extension 

Visitors who wish to stay longer must apply for an extension before their current status expires, usually at least 30 days in advance. If an extension is submitted on time, the applicant may remain in Canada under implied status until a decision is made.
